Square in a Square® Technique Ruler.
The Square
in a Square® Technique Ruler greatly facilitates the square in a square
technique. This ruler is 8 * 12 of heavy plastic entirely
suitable for rotary cutting. It is manufactured by Omnigrid, a name closely
associated with fine rulers of all kinds. It includes the three angles
60, 90 and 120 degrees the necessary to achieve the 15 options,
and has a hole for hanging, a very good thing. It comes with a folder,
which has clear and detailed explanation of options one through seven.
I love it. You will love it too.

Square in a Square® Technique Video (VHS)
You say you
cant learn to do anything by reading books? You say a demonstration
is worth ten thousand words? You say youre from Missouri? So you
admit youre a show me person? Well, have I got a treat
for you. Jodi Barrows has developed a system for producing quilt blocks
and quilt block sections with astonishing simplicity, accuracy, and speed.
She calls it the Square in a Square technique. She uses strip piecing
and unique rotary cutting to produce frequently used patterns and sections
of patterns. For example, one simple square of fabric with strips sewn
on all four sides, properly cut, produces two perfect flying geese blocks
or four half square triangles without ever having to cut or sew a triangle.
Sound like magic? Well, its a kind of magic any quilter from beginner
to advanced can perform.
In her video,
Square in a Square, New Quilting Technique, Jodi demonstrates the technique
in careful detail. Beginning with the very basic configuration, she expands
to an additional 14 variations, each one demonstrated and explained. You
slowly begin to see how parts of blocks fit together and to understand
how to adapt the technique in your own blocks. Jodi also shows many quilts
from her own collection, reiterating for you which variation produced
the blocks. This is a well-filmed video that will change your quilt construction
skills forever.

Square in a Square® Book
Jodi Barrows
first book, Square in a Square® (SnS) introduces a new technique for
rotary cutting and strip piecing that allows quilters to achieve perfect
points with improved accuracy, simplicity of construction, and speed.
The resulting blocks go together with great ease and lie very flat. Sound
too good to be true? Trust me, its true.
The revolutionary
technique begins with a square piece of fabric to which additional strips
are sewn to each side. On the surface, this doesnt seem to hold
all that much promise, but Jodi has designed a special ruler called Square
in a Square® Technique Ruler which makes the unusual cutting incredibly
easy. She includes diagrams showing how to use a regular quilting ruler
for this task, but you will be a much happier camper with the specialized
version.
The theme
is a square inside a square, but the variations which Jodi calls options
are quite remarkable. She explains and expands upon seven options in this
first book. Using her system, you can make half square triangles four
at a time and flying geese blocks two at a time, and the resulting points
are sharp and easily achieved. The first six options begin with a center
square, the seventh with a sixty degree diamond for a center.

The technique has moved on with the 18 new diamond shapes. This concept of simple strip sewing turns any level of seamstress into a Master Quilter! In 2002, the book Diamonds by the Square was published introducing the basic diamond concept of the system with Options #7, #18, #19 and #20. These four are the basic building blocks for the new 18 units. From these diamond units, quilts can now be made with ease, accuracy and speed. No more “Y” seams, set in pieces, or ripping it out again! The diamond center has expanded in ability, creating circles, curves, movement, dept and dimension to simple strip piecing. Difficult quilt designs are a thing of the past when you understand this easy technique.
