Square In A Square
by Jodi Barrows

The new rotary cutting and strip piecing technique allows the average quilter to achieve perfect points with astonishing simplicity, accuracy and speed. If you love the look of intricate patterns but not the work of templates and hand piecing, this method is for you.

The result of smooth flat work and accurate points the first time around are exhilarating. Master piecing and winning ribbons are just a technique away!

Norma's Notes

  • The Square in a Square book is the "brain child" of Jodi Barrows. The ruler helps you create: Flying Geese, half square triangles and diamonds WITHOUT cutting any triangles.
  • The Square in a Square book (first of a large cast and more ideas in the works) as 21 projects to get you started on the basics.

Square in a Square® Block of the Month Program 'CD'

QYSNS BOMAA8

Group A teaches the beginner how to use the Square in a Square® technique. Each month, the student learns a new Option™ in sequence. This is a scrappy quilt and it offers the shop a great way to clean up the bolts on their shelves. This CD offers different ways to run your program as a Block of the Month. Contains twelve 8" blocks.

QYSNS BOMB12

Group B is a great way to continue on with the Square in a Square® system, learning many Options™ not used in Group A. It reinforces the most common Options™, such as Option™ 3 (flying geese) and Option™ 4 (half-square triangles). We focus on the beauty of these twelve 12” blocks. Setting instructions are included. Each block is written using the fabric collection "Liz’s Mercantile."

QYSNS BOMC12

Group C contains a twist to each monthly block by adding some simple appliqué. Alternate instructions are included for those who are simply frightened by any appliqué. Your Sisters Club™ will enjoy their twelve 12” blocks and the simple 2-inch settings. This is a great way to teach the Square in a Square® system and implement the new Cross-cut 4-patch™ and Cross-cut 9-patch™ rulers. Each block is written using the "Leaving Riverton" fabric collection.

Square in a Square® Teacher’s Workbook

QYSNS-T04

It doesn't take long for skills and knowledge to get outdated in our fast changing world. Technology keeps advancing and the flood of new information can make it hard to keep up and sort out the good from the bad. As teachers we must constantly adapt to new products and techniques. We must constantly retool ourselves, or we become obsolete.

Lifelong learning is the only way to remain competitive in the business world. You should invest in your own growth and development. This way you can come up with new and better ways or products or service to offer your students. As teachers we need to acquire new skills or classes to stay abreast of what's new and keep our future employable! We need to read, attend workshops or seminars and progressively implore about new techniques, products, or skills. It's a different quilt world these days.

It is a new era and the quilter wants productivity, accuracy and ease. Our job as teachers is to help the students achieve understanding and knowledge that they can put to use. We must get the message across quickly and accurately. We need specialized knowledge. Keep up with how your field of expertise is changing. Delve deeper. Keep learning. Become an expert by developing a better package of knowledge and skills. The Square in a Square Technique or system is knowledge. We have entered an information age in the quilt world.

New technology in rotary cutting and strip piecing has already created a vastly different approach in the way we create patchwork. We stifle our productivity if we cling to old assumptions and rules about how quilts should be constructed. You and your students will be rewarded when you catch on to the new era of quilt technology. Some students catch on immediately while others feel like its driving at night in a fog. You can only see as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip (quilt) that way! Let the solution to the patchwork problems start with you and the Square in a Square Technique Systems. This is the way quilting was meant to be, fast, fun and fabulous!
